高山昭和館

Twenty-seven years have passed since the end of the Showa Period in 1989. Children born in Heisei Period have grown up, a birthday of Emperor Showa April 29- become “Showa Day”, and at the time, a movie set in the Showa Period became popular as this resulted in Showa Boom.

When you look back, the Showa Period made massive changes in its period, “from militarism to democracy “and “agricultural to industry”. That we relate in our daily life also have changed dramatically, “from Japanese food to Western food”, “from Japanese Clothing to Western Clothing” and “from Wooden earth wall construction method to Prefabrication method”.
Advances in the Industrialization resulted in the increased mechanization of agriculture, which led to the shift of population to the city. Increase of electrical appliances, reduced the women’s household work, that stimulated the social progress of women. Development of chemistry encouraged the increase of pesticides and fertilizers, and an enhancement of food production resolved the shortage of food. Advances in synthetic fibers resulted in abundant in clothing, and Japan moved from an era of shortages to an era of surplus. Widespread use of Automobile also changed our life environment. On the other hand, due to the rapid economic growth, and over requirement of convenience, it was unexpectable in early Showa era to suffer from “atopy” or “hay fever”. In recent years, global warming has become a significant society problem. Did we perhaps lose sight of something very important, as we pursued increased convenience?

Things that were destined to be thrown out in this age when consumption is considered a virtue. Relying on records from the Showa Period, we hope that through this exhibit we can all fondly look back at the Showa Period, while at the same time thinking about the direction we should be taking in the 21st century.

Looking for the treasures of Showa Period

Please look around your house, and check all the closet, top of the shelves, and the boxes that someone left behind. When you open up these boxes, it will evoke fond memories from the past like a time capsule. We collects these valuable things, which tells a story of the good old days, to make a fondly nostalgic memory of Museum. We would like to pass down the heritage of Showa Period to future generations, which our parents have left behind.
